Call for case studies on paints and coatings for external timber

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are collaborating with Historic England on a joint programme of research into paints and coatings for timber, lime and metal. We are interested to hear about any recent, current or proposed projects which could help inform future research and best practice guidance. Dendrochronology Research Framework for Scotland

The Dendrochronology Research Framework (published November 2024) forms part of the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework (SCARF). It was written and reviewed by specialists in timber and woodland, with funding from Forestry and Land Scotland and HES. It details the history of the timber trade, summarises the range of applications for dendro, highlights recent developments and good practice, and sets out key questions to help guide work. Tree ring dating at Stirling Castle provides one of the case studies.

Ardroch Burn Crossing at Doune Castle

A new bridge between Doune Castle and the town was installed to help unlock wider community investment. It also provided an opportunity to showcase innovative construction techniques leading to lower environmental impacts. ‘Glue and screw’ lamination (short sections of timber offset, laminated and screwed together) was used to create large solid mass structural spans. This allowed lower grade timber (local larch from the neighbouring estate) to be specified. It was cut at a local sawmill and visually graded on site.
