Joint research programme with Historic England

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are participating in a joint research programme with Historic England and other partners, focussed on paints and coatings for use on external lime plasters, timber and ferrous metals. Expected to run for at least 12 years, the research programme aims to produce evidence-based advice, develop robust methodologies for the selection and specification of paint, and improve public perception of traditional external paints and coatings.

Literature review on protective coatings for ferrous metals

HES have commissioned a high-level literature review to create baseline knowledge of existing relevant literature and research regarding protective coatings for ferrous metals. This was completed by Peter Meehan (Historic Metalwork Conservation Company). The findings will help inform a programme of research in this area.
