Call for case studies on paints and coatings for ferrous metal

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are collaborating with Historic England on a joint programme of research into paints and coatings for external timber, lime and metal. We are interested in hearing about any recent, current or proposed projects which could help inform future research and best practice guidance. Literature review on protective coatings for ferrous metals

HES commissioned a literature review to create baseline knowledge of existing relevant literature and research regarding protective coatings for ferrous metals. This was completed by Peter Meehan (Historic Metalwork Conservation Company). The findings will help inform a programme of research in this area.

Cannons maintenance and conservation project

The HES Estate includes a range of ferrous objects and structures requiring ongoing conservation. This includes over 150 historic cannons that form part of the HES object collection. Approximately half of these are on loan from the Royal Armouries.

We have begun working with both internal and external stakeholders to establish a comprehensive programme of conservation for our cannon collections. Building off current research and the maintenance work that already happens at our sites, this project seeks to address the unique challenges presented by caring for cannons displayed outdoors, where weather, pollution, and visitor impact has an ongoing effect on their condition.The cannons at HES present an ideal case study for looking at the care and conservation of historic outdoor ironwork at HES overall, and the lessons learned from this project in conjunction with research into paints and coatings will inform future practice and guidance.
