Our building conservation summer school is for everyone. Whether you've always wanted to know more about conservation, are looking for a career change, are a student studying a related degree or a professional who wants to hone your conservation skills. 

Get hands-on with stonemasonry and lime mortar, see pioneering conservation projects in action at historic places and network with Scotland’s leading conservation experts. From traditional skills to modern technology, this is your unique opportunity to experience 5 full days of talks, theory, hands-on activities and field trips. Consider this your conservation masterclass at Scotland's dedicated conservation centre and beyond. 

You’ll learn the latest techniques on caring for traditional buildings, whether you’re a conservation beginner or professional. If you're a student studying on a building conservation related course, you might also be eligible for one of our exclusive bursary places.

No background or experience is needed. Just bring enthusiasm and an interest to learn.

Highlights of previous Summer Schools

  • Opportunity to see first-hand and close up conservation in practice with exclusive visits to our properties in care (such as on the scaffolding at Stirling Castle and Dunkeld Cathedral)
  • The Bannockburn House trust gave our students a behind the scenes, in depth tour of the history and works taking place at this forgotten Stirling property (we have photos)
  • Our students enjoyed a rare opportunity to have a fascinating historic tour through Stirling by our senior technical officer (we have photos)
  • Hands on activities included Slaking and mixing lime, stone masonry, lime plaster demo and mortar analysis and stone matching as well as getting messy with earth buildings! (we have photos)
  • Enjoy over 20 lectures on various different traditional skills, methods and techniques in conservation from a range of experts
  • Learn how digital innovation is being used across conservation and experience augmented reality, 3d films and 3d printing (we have photos)
